There is a trek that every serious mountain walker knows by name. A route whispered about in base camps and marked on maps with a kind of reverence. The Tour du Mont Blanc is not simply a trail — it is a pilgrimage. A 170-kilometre circuit of Western Europe's highest summit, winding through France, Italy, and Switzerland, crossing eleven major passes, and threading through valleys where the air smells of pine resin and the glaciers seem close enough to touch.

The journey begins in Chamonix, the historic capital of alpinism, where the silhouette of Mont Blanc dominates every view and the cafés are full of climbers comparing notes. From there, the TMB climbs into the French Alps and immediately sets its tone: huge. The Col de la Croix du Bonhomme delivers your first sweeping panorama, a 360-degree revelation of snow-capped ridgelines that stretches all the way to the Gran Paradiso massif in the distance.

Crossing the Col de la Seigne into Italy is one of the route's great moments. The Val d'Aoste opens below you like a green amphitheatre, its farms and hamlets seemingly untouched by the modern world. The Rifugio Elisabetta — perched on a spur with views of the Glacier du Miage — is where trekkers gather each evening over pasta and local wine, comparing blisters and mapping the days ahead. The Italian section of the TMB is arguably its most intimate: smaller refuges, quieter paths, and the magnetic pull of Mont Blanc's southern face always visible above.

Switzerland arrives via the Grand Col Ferret, and with it come the serene valleys of the Valais and the mirror-still waters of Champex Lake. The Swiss leg of the TMB is gentler in gradient but no less beautiful — a landscape of barns and orchards, cowbells drifting across meadows, and the unmistakable efficiency of the Swiss mountain hut system. The final kilometres back into France, descending through the Chamonix Valley with Mont Blanc filling the entire northern horizon, feel genuinely triumphant.

What makes the TMB exceptional isn't just the scenery — extraordinary as that is. It's the sense of completion. Of having walked all the way around a mountain that defines a continent's skyline.
